Mentors and Friends - Greeley, CO
Workshop
June 4th, 2010
Mentors and Friends is a non profit with 40 years of experience providing mentorships for children and teens in Weld County, CO. Some of their services include one-to-one mentorships, group activities, as well as tutoring programs.
Today we came to their Greeley house to teach a workshop on how to use loop-based digital audio workstations to produce music of any genre. They have an excellent computer lab available for students to use when they're not in school, and we provided them with our sample bank and music software to host music programs with their kids.
We had some excellent participants in the workshop. The kids had great attitudes, and were very excited to learn how to make music that sounded professional. We taught them the basics and let them begin exploring the program. Once the foundation was established, we moved on to begin practicing the development of song structure and to learning the nuances of the software.
Mentors and Friends is lucky to have Dustin Haley as its Program Manager. He was an excellent help getting the computer lab set up, and he is great with the kids. He was there every step of the way learning the program along with the students, and since he has some prior experience, he was able to grasp the more advanced concepts very quickly. This fits in well with the vision of Youth On Record: to expand the availability of the tools of music production by training staff who are already active with the youth of their community. Now Dustin is able to host music classes with the kids and teens of Weld County.
